Play: a Tribute to Maggie and Sebastian

Maggie with red toy

This YouTube video reminds us of Maggie, our 3/4 Westie – 1/4 Bichon Frise, AND Sebastian, 1/2 Shih Tzu – 1/2 Bichon Frise, who kept us laughing by playing hide-and-seek, chase-and-be-chased every day. The mannerisms of the Westies in this video are Maggie’s precisely.

  1. I have always thought of myself as a bit of a dog expert because of the mailman gig… and, I’m slow to appreciate in-home animal antics. I have never seen anything like this, and I like it. My favorite part is when they call it off and move on together. There is a sweet relationship going on there. It reminds me of my friend Jon and his two dogs. He walks with them in St. Louis Park. No leash and they make no deviations without permission. Yes… they look to Jon for the okay. They avoid danger… no crossing the street until the signal is issued. When I was the mailman, I had dog friends… and that seemed like the best thing. When I lived in the redwoods, my old friend Petrushka who was of the German Shepherd persuasion, would come up to my cabin to visit for just a few minutes whenever I drove my old 66 Volvo up the hill after work. There were dogs who would meet up with me when I walked mail routes… and spend hours with me. My friends would protect me from “bad dogs.” The bad guys would never choose to pick on me with my escort nearby. The protectors had smart manners, knew how to stay out of trouble with my customers. This was in the days before serious dog rules of course.

    • Thanks for the memories, Robert. Maggie and Sebastian were SO FUNNY together. What you saw on the video could have been them, especially the cocking of the head just before breaking the stillness to pounce. They were like watching Laurel and Hardy. Even toward the end, they still had that sense of playfulness. I think we’re meant to play like that!
