Notice: CANCELLATION

That’s the subject of the email. “Notice: CANCELLATION“.  I’m being cancelled. It’s late. I’m watching the my favorite baseball team. They’re finally winning. I’m enjoying the distraction. Then comes the email notification. I open it, fearing they’re canceling my credit card or something serious.

Here’s the content, not a cancellation, but a solicitation, complete with an end-of-time, shocking red background and graphics:

CANCELLATION NOTICE: TRIPLE-MATCH

We live in a sea of hyperbole and deception. I’d like to think we’re not this stupid, and that we don’t respond to deception, apocalyptic urgency, and trauma drama. Am I alone? What to you think?

  1. Yes, I received the same thing. Most recent of many shame-inducing attempts. I even sent back an e-mail to the ether complaining about it — mostly that it motivates me even more to hang on to my money. Just as the constant phone calls do — calls which, thanks to Caller ID — I don’t answer. How very sad, though, that our “democracy” has come to this.

    • “Shame-inducing” – that’s it exactly, isn’t it, and I respond the same way. These messages drive me away. They don’t induce shame. They don’t induce action. They create anger.

Yesterday I wrote Sen. Al Franken in response to an earlier email: “Dear Al, I want to bring something to your attention that has become all too characteristic of the DSCC and other solicitations. Hype and overstatement (“change the political landscape FOREVER), apocalyptic urgency, and the language of violence (“delivering an agonizing blow” to the Republican Party) are the kind of mindset and language that makes me gagI don’t like being a member of a tree house club. Neither do many others.”
