“All human goodness is social goodness. Man is fundamentally gregarious and his morality consists in being a good member of his community.”
“The chief purpose of the Christian Church in the past has been the salvation of individuals. But the most pressing task of the present is not individualistic. Our business is to make over an antiquated and immoral economic system….”
The Rev. Walter Rauschenbusch had a profound impact on Christian theology and activism that led to the end of child labor and to legislation that protected worker rights in the early 20th Century. The man whose theology was shaped by his ministry with the poorest of the poor in the “Hell’s Kitchen” of New York City is the man from whose “Social Gospel” Glenn Beck now urges church members to flee for their lives.

Doesn’t say much for Glenn Beck and his ilk.

I am mindful of the day my Physiological Psychologist colleague made me aware that the fittest who survive are those who are able to adapt, but even more, those who are able to cooperate.

Mona, Adaptation in some circles is anathema to faith, as you know. But I have yet to meet a person who still believes that the world is flat. Hmmm.

As Christianity is destroyed, the world becomes more militant and savage.

Of course if we, as the Church, give up on Social Gospel, we would then have to cut out some 80% of the teachings of Jesus. Which I believe would mean also doing away with the name, Christianity.

Thank you, Jim. You know where I’m coming from and we share the commitment to the Kingdom of God, which, as a new acquaintance remarked on the evening of the Martin Luther King Celebration, “knows nothing of the boundaries imposed by man.” The Kingdom of Jesus turns the world on its head.
