A Plea for Conscience and Duty

  1. Until January 6, 2021, I would have bet my life that we were better than that. In a matter of seconds, as I stood in horror in front of my TV I came to the sickening realization that half of us are not better than that. And when I posted my opinion of the pardons on my Facebook this week, one of the commenters told me that I should find another country to live in. So, no… we are not better than that. We are no longer that shining beacon on a hill. We are no longer a country the rest of the world should look up to. I majored in political science and minored in history in college in the 1970s. I never thought my country would turn into this. I have lost all hope that the US Congress and the US Supreme Court will stand up for our democracy. The number of Executive Orders this week has given me whiplash. Christians are supposed to forgive, but I don’t know if I will live long enough to forgive the people who voted for this evil. For the first time in my life, I know that anything I post on social media is putting my life at risk. Welcome to 1930s Germany! Thank you for posting Senator Murphy’s speech. There aren’t enough Senator Murphys in Washington. I fear for his life now, too.

    • Janet,

Thank you for taking time to comment, and for your comment itself. It’s chilling. The night-time firing of inspectors-general sets fire to the most independent barrier to lawlessness and the abuse of power. “Yes” to everything you’ve said. Thank God for the prophetic witness of Bishop Buddy and the Christian communions that take the gospel seriously.

  2. Well, Gordon…we’re about half better than that. No one who voted for this cannibal fanboy man-baby, not even the “low-information voters”–what a euphemism! and uniquely American excuse for intellectual laziness and complacent mediocrity–can plead ignorance of what they’ve lent their sacred votes to. We are not on an incremental slope to fascism, oligarchy, and oppression. It is happening. Here. Now. There can be no more abiding to see just how far it will go. Who wants to be in the vanguard of protests, and test the determination of this commander in chief to unleash our own military against us? Count me in.
