When Words Fail Me

Any responsible citizen keeps track of the news. No American can honestly claim ignorance about matters of utmost national importance, like a white supremacist domestic terrorist plot to kidnap the governor of Michigan, or the invitation to a domestic terrorist group to “stand back, and stand by” . . . or the lifetime appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Anyone who can’t — or won’t — answer the question whether it is legal to interfere with and intimidate citizens’ Constitutional right to vote; anyone who can’t, or won’t, say unequivocally that the Constitution does not grant a president the authority or power to prevent the peaceful transfer of power; anyone who claims not to know President Trump’s frequently declared three-fold litmus test for filling the vacant seat of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg brings to mind the wisdom of Albert Einstein, Justice Oliver Wendall Holmes, and St. Augustine.

The lie was raised to the dignity of a political instrument.

Albert Einstein

Sin has many tools, but a lie is the handle that fits them all.

Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr,

All sin is a kind of lying.

attributed to Saint Augustine

  1. Gordon, I was trying to trace this chauvinism to its reincarnation and I keep being drawn to Meet Gingrich’s ” Contract with America”.
This extreme particism keeps raising its ugly head.

    • Thanks so much, Jim. There’s nothing like old friends, especially when they are fewer and fewer as the clock ticks forward. Wayne is sorely missed by us all, as are Dale (Hartwig), and Steve (Shoemaker), and Lew and Mil.

  3. Words have failed me far too often in the past four years, Gordon. Am still holding out a scintilla of hope that a few Republicans will stumble across their consciences in the next couple of weeks and refuse to confirm Judge Barrett. Her qualifications (or lack thereof) aside, this is not the right time for this decision. And praying that we can take the first step towards getting this country back on track early next month. We cannot continue in this way…..

    • Lori, Birds of a feather! Two robins facing blue jays and catbirds won’t likely save the nest, but we have to try.

The hope that a few members of the GOP Senate majority will “stumble across their consciences” before the Senate votes on confirmation rests on a very slender thread, but stranger things have happened.

If Lindsey Graham and other members of the Senate majority come to believe that their re-elections are put at risk because of a tidal wave of opposition to their hypocrisy, they are likely to join the president. The idea of being a “loser” is like death itself. Who knows. However that may be, getting the country back to its moorings will pose a Herculean challenge.

      • Love the analogy, Gordon. Have felt more like a wren facing off against a raptor these past months.😳I realize that the likelihood of any GOP members having an epiphany is slim, but did read this morning that Massachusetts GOP Gov. Charlie Baker has come out and said he will not vote for Trump. He has proven quite adept at putting a ‘red thread through a blue needle,’ so not surprised by his feelings, but was a bit surprised that he would go on record. I admire him. Maybe we’ll catch a break and former MA resident Mitt Romney will be inspired to follow suit! Regardless, you are correct, it is going to take a serious effort to bring this country back to itself. I feel like we have really lost our way. And that saddens me deeply.

        • Hi again, Lori. There IS something we can do that would matter. Many of us have elderly friends who may be confused about voting or feel so overwhelmed that they’ve concluded that it’s useless. We’re calling several of those people in our circle of influence to offer encouragement and assistance where needed.

Tonight NBC does the unthinkable — hosting a Trump town hall forum that competes with ABC’s t.h.f w Biden.
