I’m having a hard time . . .

“I’m having a hard time ...”
 he said with a scowl
 coming through the line
 to shake the hand
 of the preacher who had
 preached his first sermon
 at the church judged
to be the leading voice in
 the civil rights and peace
 movements in the city.

 “I’m having a hard time
 not hitting you,” he said,
 holding back his right arm
with his left hand as the
 new 26 year-old anti-war
 pastor reached to shake
 his hand.

 “Pools of Blood” had packed
a punch with the chair of the
 City Human Rights Commission.
