Elijah’s first word

Elijah and Kristin are home alone again today, snow-bound by the blizzard that’s hit Minnesota. Elijah is entertaining himself with the car Grandma gave him. His Mom looks on as Elijah’s speaking his first word — well, not exactly a word. Or is it?

“Uh-oh!”

Elijah’s daycare provider only speaks Spanish. “Uh-oh!” is the universal language at daycare. It’s also becoming the first word of those trying to keep up with Elijah at home or at Grandma and Grandpa’s. It’ll be a long day for Kristin. Say a prayer there won’t be too many reasons to say “Uh-oh!”

About Gordon C. Stewart

I've always liked quiet. And, like most people, I've experienced the world's madness. "Be Still! Departure from Collective Madness" (Wipf and Stock Publishers, Jan. 2017) distills 47 years of experiencing stillness and madness as a campus minister and Presbyterian pastor (IL, WI, NY, OH, and MN), poverty criminal law firm executive director, and social commentator. Our cat Lady Barclay reminds me to calm down and be much more still than I would be without her.

  1. The uh-oh is great and so is the walking!! WOW! But ANOTHER blizzard–that is ridiculous. Every time you have a blizzard, we have cooler weather and rain in Atlanta. 😦
    Keep enjoying Elijah!
Jennifer is on vacation this week, and Tom and I are the dog-carers. And it’s been raining. Tom keeps reminding me that the dog is easier than kids!

  2. Close your ears, but this is true. My son’s first word was “shit.” He walked into the coffee table and stubbed is little toe. My MOTHER was there and it was less than 15 minutes until EVERY SINGLE FAMILY MEMBER knew the story. You don’t need Facebook. Just a mother, 6 brothers and sisters and telephones.
